We are pleased to announce the release of Parrot 6, the latest version of our security-oriented operating system.

This update brings several enhancements and new features, reflecting our commitment to providing a reliable and advanced platform for our users. Parrot 6 continues our tradition of delivering a sophisticated, yet user-friendly, environment for security professionals, developers, and privacy enthusiasts. Detailed information about the changes and improvements in this version can be found below.

### How do I get Parrot OS?

You can download Parrot OS by clicking [here](http://parrotsec.org/download) and, as always, we invite you to never trust third party download sources and stick to the official download links instead.

If you need any help or in case the direct downloads don't work for you, we also provide official Torrent files, which can circumvent firewalls and network restrictions in most cases.

### How do I upgrade from a previous version?

First of all, we always suggest updating your version to be sure that is stable and functional. You can upgrade an existing system via APT using one of the following commands:

*   `sudo parrot-upgrade (run it twice)`  
    

or

*   `sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade (run them twice)`

A known bug while upgrading from Parrot 5.x to Parrot 6.x consists of a failure in building some dkms kernel modules. 

Most of them were properly deprecated, but you may still want to remove *realtek-rtl8188eus-dkms* in case it fails and re-attempt the upgrade. It is safe to re-install *realtek-rtl8188eus-dkms* after the system gets fully upgraded, as it builds successfully on a fully upgraded parrot 6 system.

Even if we allow updating your version, a backup and a fresh installation is encouraged when a major system version is out. This is to ensure a cleaner and more reliable user experience, especially if you upgrade from a very old version of Parrot.

### What's new in Parrot OS 6 

#### Main system

*   **Debian 12:** The system has been updated to be based on the newly released Debian 12, offering enhanced stability and features.
*   **Linux Kernel 6.5:** Incorporates the latest Linux kernel with additional patches for network sniffing and injection, enhancing cybersecurity capabilities, and of course better performance and native support for the latest intel and amd CPUs.
*   **Advanced DKMS and Wi-Fi Drivers:** Includes backported DKMS modules for Linux kernel 6.5, covering extra Wi-Fi drivers for improved network analysis and the latest Nvidia drivers for better hardware compatibility.
*   **Pentesting tools updated:** All penetration testing tools have been updated, ensuring users have access to the latest methods and techniques.
*   **Updated Libraries and Python 3.11:** The introduction of new libc6 and Python 3.11 allows several system tools to be upgraded to their latest versions.
*   **Updated System appearance:** Slight modifications have been made to the system's graphical interface, providing a fresh look.
*   **Experimental containerization for unsupported tools:** Experimental feature that allows containerizing tools not currently supported by the system, improving flexibility. This will enable future versions of parrot to bring in several tools that were either deprecated/dropped in the past, or that were never added before due to their integration complexity.  
*   **Grub Fail-Safe Boot options:** Grub bootloader patches reintroduced to ensure reliable and safe booting options.
*   **Improved Calamares installer:** The installation process has been improved with updates to the Calamares installer.
*   **Audio System switch to Pipewire:** Pipewire is now the default audio system, replacing PulseAudio, for better audio handling.
*   **VirtualBox from Debian Sid:** VirtualBox has been backported and reintroduced from Debian Sid for enhanced virtualization support.

#### Website 

*   **NextJS and MUI Dependencies:** Updated specific dependencies for NextJS and MUI, improving performance and compatibility.
*   **Parrot 6 links and info:** Addition of download links for Parrot OS 6, along with refreshed screenshots and updated information.
*   **WSL v0.0.6:** Release of version 0.0.6 for the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), indicating improvements or fixes in this iteration.

#### Documentation

*   **Parrot 6 update with new Mirrors:** This update signifies the transition to Parrot OS version 6, which is supported by new download mirrors contributed by the community, enhancing accessibility and download speeds for users.

#### Raspberry Pi images

*   **New Builder for Core, Home, and Security Editions:** A specialized builder has been introduced for these editions of Parrot OS, tailored to meet specific ParrotOS requirements. 
*   **Performance improvements:** General improvements in system performance.
*   **Driver Updates:** Updated drivers for better hardware compatibility.
*   **SSH Key refresh improvement:** Enhanced the process for refreshing SSH keys during the first boot.
*   **Default graphics driver activation:** Graphics drivers are now enabled by default for improved out-of-the-box display performance.
*   **Raspberry Pi Imager integration:** The system now integrates with the Raspberry Pi Imager tool for easier image writing and setup.

*   **New Installation Script:** An updated script is now available, making it easier to install Parrot OS on Debian or Debian-based systems.

#### Architect

*   **New Tasksel Layout:** Introduction of an updated layout for Tasksel, enhancing the user experience during software selection.
*   **32-bit deprecation:** Phasing out of support for 32-bit systems, focusing on more modern architecture.
*   **Parrot-Core Installation Fix:** Resolution of an issue where the upgrade of parrot-core would cause the installation process to hang.
