
We are proud to announce Parrot Security 6.4, the latest release of our security oriented operating system, this new version comes packed with most of the enhancements that our vibrant community asked for, and it features the amazing work of many new contributors.

Many tools, like Metasploit, Sliver, Caido and Empire received important updates, the Linux kernel was updated to a more recent version, and the latest LTS version of Firefox was provided with all our privacy oriented patches.

Parrot 6.4 will most likely be the last release of the 6.x branch.

#### How do I get ParrotOS?

**Important**: Always use official download links to ensure your security and avoid getting a tampered copy.

#### How do I upgrade from a previous version?

You can upgrade an existing system via APT using one of the following commands:

*   `sudo parrot-upgrade`

or

*   `sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade`


If you experience any GPG keyring issue, remember to update your keyring too as described in [this article](https://parrotsec.org/blog/2025-01-11-parrot-gpg-keys).
Please note that this issue may occur with Parrot 6.2 or previous versions. However, this should not be an issue with the latest version, 6.4.

**Pro Tip**: While upgrading is supported, we strongly recommend backing up your data and performing a fresh installation for the smoothest experience. This is especially crucial if you’re upgrading from a very old version, as it ensures optimal performance and compatibility.

## What's new in ParrotOS 6.4

This release lays the groundwork for Parrot 7. The development team took the opportunity to rewrite and refine several core build scripts for future releases.
Compared to previous versions, we have introduced some more automation: many scripts will streamline our release process, while others are still under development.

Anyway, in this 6.4 release, several ParrotOS packages are now upgraded to their latest version. Some examples include:

All the Debian compatible tools provided by Microsoft are now available for installation via `apt` from the official Parrot repository, so we officially support Powershell 7.5, .NET runtime and SDKs from version 5 to version 9 and many more!

- `parrot-menu` got new desktop entries (like Sliver, Rocket, etc...) and several other launchers got updated.
- `parrot-tools` includes new references to tools such as netcat-openbsd, goshs, dbd and starkiller, which means that parrot now comes with many more pre-installed tools.
- `parrot-core` got a fix regarding $HOME path and and autocompletion, while /root is no longer world-readable.
- `parrot-firefox-profiles` a new Firefox ESR version is out, which unfortunately ignores `/usr/share/firefox` and other paths for *distribution.ini* and *policies.json* files. Only `/usr/lib/firefox` is supported but gets overwritten on updates. We updated our custom package with a dpkg trigger to restore our custom config and prevent firefox telemetry to call home.

### Parrot Projects updates

Parrot 6.4 will probably the last release based on the 6.x branch, which tracks the Debian 12 release, which will soon be replaced by the newer Debian 13.

We are already at work on Parrot 7.0, which is entirely based on Debian 13.

We can't say much at the moment, but we are doing our best to introduce different desktop flavors, RISC-V support and much more.
