

# ParrotOS 7 Beta Release Notes

The Parrot Security Team is pleased to announce the release of the beta images for ParrotOS 7.

This new version introduces numerous changes, enhancements, and increased stability for your work and daily tasks.
A major effort has been made on the infrastructure, the build scripts for ISOs and virtual machines, with several automations that will make life easier for us developers but, above all, for users, thanks to the possibility of having images produced on a weekly basis.

Some core components of the system have been upgraded, such as parrot-core, parrot-interface, calamares-settings-parrot, parrot-themes, parrot-menu and more have received important improvements. For example, the configurations of parrot-core have been changed to provide better support for multiple Desktop Environments, and some parrot-menu scripts have been reviewed and rewritten (from Nim to Go).

Green on black has always distinguished us, so although the logo and other ParrotOS services retain their original style and colors, we have decided to extend our classic terminal green across the entire system. It is a radical change that fully reflects our future goals.

## Debian 13

First and foremost, Parrot 7 is entirely based on the latest Debian 13 release. Debian 13 “Trixie” marks a decisive shift towards our modernization, focusing on clearing technical debt and future-proofing the system.

The `/tmp` directory is automatically mounted as tmpfs (in RAM) instead of on the physical disk. This improves performance and reduces SSD wear, and it means that data in /tmp will be lost at every reboot (as it should be for temporary files).

In `apt`, a new, more readable text interface has been introduced, with the use of colors, aligned columns, and a clearer presentation of missing dependencies or removed packages.

## New Official Desktop Enviroment: KDE

Historically, Parrot has always included MATE as the official and primary Desktop Environment (DE), providing support for other DEs and WMs only thanks to the community’s efforts. 

While MATE will continue to be supported by us as long as upstream development continues, We have noticed and observed the continuous improvements made by the KDE team, such as their approach toward Wayland and Qt6, enhancements in its main various components, the new task switcher, KRunner, improvements on monitor HiDPI/4K, updates to system settings, and much more. 

After several rounds of waiting and extensive testing, we have decided to include KDE as the **default** and **official Desktop Environment** for ParrotOS 7. The improvement is not only aesthetic, but also in terms of usability and greater consistency with our future goals.

ParrotOS 6 “Lorykeet” includes MATE by default, and we will provide a guide on how to upgrade it at the time of the final release.
