
# ParrotOS 7.1 Release Notes

All the updates released over the past few weeks following the launch of Parrot 7 have now been consolidated into this minor release. 
While Parrot 7.0 is already stable and fully usable, with version 7.1 we have investigated and improved several issues reported 
by our users during their daily experience with the OS. 

You’ll also find updates to our security toolset, along with a few small new features that we hope will make your journey 
in cybersecurity – and beyond – even more enjoyable.

Some known GRUB bugs affecting certain laptops, which prevented the OS from booting, have now been fixed.
We have also reintroduced the i386 architecture, but *only* for those dependencies required by specific tools, such as Steam.

## Community Spins

As we mentioned in the previous release, we can now build additional images as we see fit. 
Following community requests, we decided to provide Parrot 7.1 ISO images featuring the **MATE** and **LXQt** desktop environments,
along with a new spin based on the **Enlightenment** window manager.
All of these options are lightweight and suitable for virtually any use case, and of course, you can install all the security tools you need on each of them.
In this category, available on our download page, you may also find, in the future, other versions requested or developed by the community that deserve attention.

## MCPwn

One of our latest announcements concerned a tool called MCPwn (or mcpwn).

**mcpwn** is a server based on the *Model Context Protocol (MCP)*, designed to allow *Large Language Models (LLMs)*, such as Claude, Gemini, or even local LLMs, to run cybersecurity tools 
(including nmap, sqlmap, gobuster, and more) directly on the user’s local machine. 

The tool stands out for its security‑oriented architecture, which isolates command execution inside protected Docker containers to prevent unauthorized access to the host system, 
as well as for the flexibility provided by dynamic tool registration through a simple **yaml** configuration file.

Being cross‑platform and easy to integrate, mcpwn acts as an operational bridge that turns AI into an active assistant capable of performing network discovery and vulnerability scanning in a safe and controlled manner.

[It is already available for testing](https://gitlab.com/parrotsec/project/mcpwn/-/releases), and it will soon be accessible in our repositories via `apt`.

## Mirror Director

To improve the management of our repositories, we have decided to take back control of the [Mirror Director](https://gitlab.com/parrotsec/infra/mirrordirector), a lightweight HTTP redirector written in Go that powers ParrotOS’s package delivery infrastructure. 

When a client (typically `apt`) requests a package, the service determines the client’s geographical location, checks the requested file against an in‑memory index synced from the master repository, and returns an HTTP 307 redirect to the most appropriate mirror.

Mirror selection follows a hierarchical fallback chain: from country‑level mirrors, to continental defaults, to global defaults, and finally to the master server.

## Rocket

Rocket has also undergone significant changes. The project is and will remain a continuous work in progress;
however, it has now reached version **1.5.0** and features a new UI along with a few new tools.

## Website

Our website continues its UX/UI redesign process. The new download page has been designed to provide as much information as possible and make downloading your preferred edition transparent and immediate. 
It should give you a clear overview of each edition. More updates will follow over the coming months.

## Raspberry Pi

The Parrot edition for Raspberry Pi devices has not undergone major changes, but although KDE remains available and installable, 
**MATE** returns as the default desktop environment in Parrot 7.1. We are currently testing the possibility of integrating LXQt to achieve better performance.

## Upgrade from Parrot 6 Lorykeet

We always recommend installing Parrot 7.1 using the new ISO. However, for any existing installation, our updates will automatically migrate your system to Parrot 7.1.

Previous installations of Parrot 6.4 will keep the MATE desktop environment once migrated to Parrot 7.1.

It is suggested to update the system using `parrot-updater` or `parrot-upgrade`, and then install KDE through the `parrot-desktop-kde` metapackage.
